What is Group-Based Psychotherapy?
Group psychotherapy is an effective form of therapy in which a small number of people meet on a regular basis under the guidance of a professionally trained mental health clinician to help themselves and one another. There are many different approaches to therapy groups but they share in common creating a safe, supportive, and cohesive space to address personal, relationship and societal issues.
New to Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a type of therapy that involves a group of people who meet regularly to discuss their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Group can be an effective way to improve mental health and well-being.
Here are some of the benefits of group therapy:
- Support: Group therapy can provide a sense of support and community. When you are in a group, you are not alone. You are surrounded by people who understand what you are going through and who can offer support and encouragement.
- Perspective: Group can help you to see your problems from a different perspective. When you hear other people talk about their own experiences, it can help you to understand your own experiences better.
- Learning: This can be a great way to learn new coping skills and strategies for managing your mental health. You can learn from the experiences of other group members and from the therapist.
- Motivation: Group can help you to stay motivated in your recovery. When you are in a group, you are accountable to others. This can help you to stay on track with your goals.
If you are considering group therapy, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- The group should be a good fit for you. The group should be focused on the issues that you are struggling with. The group should also be a safe and supportive environment.
- The therapist should be experienced in group facilitation. The therapist should be able to facilitate the group and help the members to get the most out of the experience.
- You should be willing to share your thoughts and feelings. Group is most effective when you are willing to share your thoughts and feelings with the group members.

If someone is in a group, do they also need individual therapy?
Group treatment may be used as the primary therapy, or it can be used along with individual therapy. Talk to your therapist about what will best meet your needs.
