EMDR - Trauma Therapy Services

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a widely researched therapy method proven to provide robust and often quicker results than other therapies for a wide range of issues. What does it do? EMDR alleviates stress related to PTSD, Addiction, Depression, anxiety, panic, interpersonal issues, and more.

EMDR uses eye movements, tapping, or auditory bilateral stimulation to help the brain process or “digest” distressing memories.  This means that you can remember without feeling distressed, upset, or dysregulated. This allows the memories to be stored in a place properly relegated to the past, as opposed to continually being activated in the present.

As you may have experienced yourself, the average person is feeling more and more stressed than ever before. In addition, we have all experienced stress or trauma to some degree when we were vulnerable. This stress and trauma links with negative beliefs about ourselves and negative feelings become stuck in us. Further, this leaves us with all sorts of symptoms and problems, from low self-esteem to chronic pain.

EMDR Therapy helps the brain get these things unstuck so that we can move through life without the negative symptoms of unprocessed trauma. After the memory has been desensitized, EMDR Therapy helps you end the story with a positive or more useful conclusion about yourself. Something we love is how EMDR Therapy services help the natural wisdom and health of your brain flourish.

In fact, the developer of EMDR, Francine Shapiro called this healthy brain process your “Adaptive Information Processing” System. Your body does not forget trauma. Trauma becomes stored in your body whether or not your mind recalls it. This means that your body can react to triggers from your past without your knowledge. EMDR helps the trauma become processed and stored properly in your memory, rather than your nervous system.

Yes! EMDR is regarded as one of the more effective healing services in the trauma and mental health treatment industry.

Research indicates a success rate for EMDR in the treatment of PTSD of 80-90%, in ⅓ to ½ the time of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and results “stick” as indicated by follow-up studies conducted 15 months later to re-check.

EMDR is highly recommended by :

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) The World Health Organization (WHO) The Department of Veteran Affairs, and the Department of Defense The American Psychiatric Association The National Association of Social Workers

Other reasons to try EMDR:

  • Improve your overall health. Relieving stress has been shown to improve overall physical health.
  • Overcome persistent blocks. EMDR can relieve symptoms that talk therapies cannot address as effectively.
  • Relieve chronic symptoms
  • Think and feel better
  • Reduce physical symptoms
  • Increase achievement
  • Break free from old patterns.
  • Build resilience. EMDR can increase your ability to tolerate negative emotions and recover more quickly when you do encounter negative experiences.
  • Reclaim personal power. EMDR is supported by your body’s natural healing process and allows your mind to define the meaning of your experience. EMDR taps into and activates your natural strength and wisdom.

Research EMDR has been researched since 1989. Since 2014 over 35 randomized controlled studies (the highest standard for quality research) have been conducted showing EMDR to be effective in resolving PTSD symptoms for 80-90% of people for a single-event trauma in one to three 90-minute sessions. There are over 400 studies indicating high success rates for other conditions caused by stressful experiences.

Molly is certified in EMDR by the EMDR International Association, the governing body for all things EMDR-related.

Molly is also an EMDR Consultant and can provide EMDR consultation services for practitioners pursuing EMDR certification.

Tips to prepare for EMDR:

  • Identify your support system. Who can you call if you need to talk?
  • Have a mantra or positive affirmation you can focus on each day.
  • Know your triggers/ Identify things that could upset you between sessions.
  • Know your resources.
  • Know your strengths and the source of those strengths.
  • Learn and use grounding tools and coping skills.
  • Learn tools like breathing exercises and practice them daily.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a modified version of CBT developed to assist people in learning skills to cope and self-regulate. DBT includes specific strategies to learn mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

DBT is an evidenced-based therapy service. It has been researched and shown to be effective with multiple issues and populations. Even better, this method can be tailored to meet a variety of needs.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is an approach that helps individuals better understand the way in which their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all inter-related in order to gain mastery over their experience.

CBT is an evidenced-based practice. In other words, CBT is a method supported by empirical research. This means it’s been shown to produce positive results. In addition, CBT is another service which can be tailored to each person.

Trauma-Informed Yoga Services

Trauma-informed yoga means that we take an approach to our yoga practices that considers each person as unique and understands each person has a story and different comfort level with yoga practice.

We understand that what feels OK for one person may be distressing for another, and we empower each individual to do what works for them. We take the position that you are the expert on your experience, and we are merely guides offering options for you to consider.

There are many ways to practice yoga.  Our yoga teachers use language and practices that support diverse needs and backgrounds.

We often use yoga techniques to assist in treatment of trauma, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues. The word yoga means to yoke or unite. Yoga is much more than a physical practice, and encompasses breath control, meditation, mindfulness, and other practices which improve overall health and wellbeing. From a trauma-informed perspective, yoga is a wonderful way to assist with healing and integration in trauma recovery by reconnecting the mind, body, and spiritual aspects of the self.holistic therapy services and yoga for whole person healing
